EVALUATION: QUESTION 2

Question 2

When we created our film noir we decided to go along with the normal media conventions. This is with the femme fatal being the main character and getting the majority of screen time in our opening. This represents to the audience that she is more empowering and significant in our film noir.

There are two types of women in film noirs these are a dutiful and femme fatal, the dutiful is the women who he should be with and then femme fatal is very seductive and usually not right for the man. In our film noir we have used a females voice over this is to show that the are empowering in the film.

Our film shows a femme fatal Evelyn as a beautiful women. She is shown to get what she wants because of her costume, hair and makeup always being very alluring. The use of this shows that she is able to get what she wants. In our film noir Evelyn uses her looks to get a man to kill her husband.

In our film we went against typical conventions as our character is more complex, by not using dutiful women because we wanted to have more focus on our femme fatal.

EVALUATION: QUESTION 4

Question 4

We decided, as a group that we wanted are target audience to be the cinema going audience of 16-25. We think that people over the age of 16 will enjoy the film because it is a complex story line this will make it more interesting to watch and follow. We think it is a complex storyline because it is quite indirect. It would also appeal to, the 20-25 age group because they would be familiar with the genre. We feel that our story line is quite mature so will go with the cinema going audience. It also attracts a much more modern audience because the female character is shown as strong and independent, this is different because it is usually shown with the male character being much more empowering.

We believe our film appeals to both males and females because our main character is female and she is shown with power and is superior to the other characters. It will appeal to the male audience because of the type of film that it is. The fact it is a thriller movie will appeal to the teenagers because typically this is what they seem to prefer and watch more of.

EVALUATION: QUESTION 1

Question 1

To start our planning and research for our film noir each of us in the group watched film noirs and analysed them, we also watched neo noirs so we could see how the film noir has developed through time to suit the more modern audience. They were films such as Double indemnity’, ‘Shadow of a doubt’ and ‘sorry wrong number’. By watching these films we got ideas for our own film noir and we were able to develop and challenge the typical conventions used.

We challenged the typical film noir conventions by not using a dutiful woman this meant that there was no one right for the male character to fall in love with. This is different from the films I have watched as in double indemnity we meet Lola who is Phyllis’s daughter and she is shown as the dutiful women. Film noir was also challenged because we didn’t keep to the classic film noir story line, which are usually quite complex. Instead we decided to use a simple story line, which would be easy to follow.

As well as challenging typical media conventions we also developed them, this was done by using a femme fatal and the fact that she convince men to do what she asks. As in our film noir opening Evelyn is able to convince Johnny to kill her husband Mike. This idea was taken from the majority of film noirs that we watched because it is a big part of the typical conventions. We also developed the use of costume and makeup by the influence of ‘Pretty little liars’. This allowed us to follow conventions by having the femme fatal’s makeup alluring throughout.

EVAUATION: QUESTION 7

Question 7

When looking back at my preliminary task I could see that there was a significant improvement in the quality of filming, as we have learnt much more about the filming and editing techniques. When creating the preliminary task there were different editing techniques used these were shot reverse shot, 180 degree rule and finally match on action.

Shot reverse shot or also known as shot reaction shot is when one character says or does something and then the other person’s reaction is filmed. This is used in our film noir opening when Mike and Evelyn are arguing and you can see them both talking but the shot is of there reaction.

The 180-degree rule is when you imagine there is an invisible line through the middle of your two characters; the camera should remain on one side of the imaginary line.

Finally match on action is when the first shot is the beginning of the action and then the shot following after it is the end of the action, this ensures continuity in the filming. This is shown in my preliminary task when the door is opened, it is shown when one of the characters pushes open the door from the outside and the closing form the inside. It is also shown in our film noir opening when Evelyn is walking up to the door to open it and then you see her stepping in from a different angle.

EVALUATION: QUESTION 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your film and why?

For our film noir opening we had to decide as a group what film company we were going to use, we all had to agree on a film company we thought was suitable and relevant for our film noir opening. An independent film company is when the film is produced outside a major film studio. The film company needed to be low budget and appeal to a wide target audience.

We looked at a number of film companies but found that they distribute to specific social groups and won’t meet the wide stream audience. Our chosen film company is entertainment one otherwise known as Eone, this company works to distribute films to a wide target audience which is what we need, also we chose Eone as it is specialised with distribution of small independent films, this is therefore suitable for our film noir opening because this is what our film is similar to.

Overall we needed to choose a film company that will be able to distribute our film to a wide target audience, but also have a low budget. That’s why we are using the film company entertainment one.
